HORRIBLE AWARDS

For anyone whom I have not yet beaten over the head with this, I'm up for a HORRIBLE AWARD (A Billy?) for my cover of "Brand New Day!"

Hear it here, if you lack a copy of the 2008 Dragon*Con Whedon Track soundtrack:

http://www.myspace.com/kenkrahl

My claim to fame for the song is that it's the first known Dr. Horrible cover. I learned the words, figured out the chords, and recorded this take a mere SIX HOURS after part 2 dropped.

This is from before Penny died, y'all.

Soooo, your votes are appreciated... feel free to repost and spread the word; It'd be a helluvan honor to win!

VOTING (Before Friday!):

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pRexJI3HmI_0nSJrDXzvdZA

Daily Show Clip: Gays in the Military.

The Daily Show is routinely humorous, but is rarely Laugh-Out-Loud funny. I couldn't find the exact clip by itself, but click this and watch from 3:00 to 6:00.

www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/index.jhtml?episodeId=177584

I was absolutely rolling. I don't believe in praying FOR things. If there's a plan, it's going to unfold, and in the right way. Whatever God might be out there isn't your employee, and He's not a Genie granting wishes. The universe is in charge, here.
Prayer is meditative. It changes YOU, not the world. Prayer should bring your desires in line with the way of the universe, not the other way around.
63) Believe in reincarnation: I believe that spiriual life, like energy and matter, is never created or destroyed. It merely coalesces and dissipates. In that sense, everything is immortal. Only our vain attachment to individual identity makes us want to float up into the clouds in our bodies when we die. Mila Kunis?
79) Your dream honeymoon spot: Japan.
80) Your dream husband/wife: Someone geeky, fun, and pretty.
81) Your bedtime: Whenever. 1 or so.
82) Under your bed: 3 tubs full of classic Nintendo gear.
83) The single most important question: What are you doing right here, right now?
84) Your bad time of the day: Morning, around 9:37.
85) Your worst fear(s): The Elevated Cat.
86) The weather like? Overcast and hot.
87) The time? 2:10 PM.
88) The date? July 23, 2008.
89) The best trick you ever played on someone: Filled someone's dorm room to the ceiling with leaves in college.
I have material for like, FIVE posts, right now, but I would like to take just a second to cover the following:

THANK YOU to everyone who showered compliments upon my Acoustic Cover of "Brand New Day" this past weekend. It was made on a whim, and you made me feel so great. Fellow Fanpersons, you are the BEST. Tabs are up on the web now from better guitarists, so I know what parts I got wrong. ;-p

The song has been downloaded 108 times from Myspace so far, and it's also on Sendspace (no idea how many times from there). Myspace plays hit 169 in 3 days. Also got a good number of new LJ friends among you.
Words fail me.

For those of you who go to Dragon*Con, we're cooking something special up for you. Stay tuned!

Ok, time for shameless SELF-PROMOTION.

My new Acoustic cover of Dr. Horrible's "Brand New Day" is up at my myspace page,

www.myspace.com/kenkrahl.

This song is HARD, and I had to get it in one take, so it's not the sharpest. Still, I haven't seen any others yet. ;)

Enjoy!

(If you subscribe to the D*C boards, you might get this one twice, since I'm thinking of submitting it there, too.
Okay, I cannot wait till tomorrow morning for Part 3. WANT IT NOW!

I hope they do a good shot of the thing on his pocket at some point, so that I can replicate it for costuming. Pretty much have the rest put together, if I can get the lab coat the way I think I can. Those old-fashioned pharmacy jackets are hard to come by.

Mad scientists dress like welders wearing white smocks, apparently.

MEANWHILE, I'm working on a little something else in tribute to Part 3 coming out tomorrow... stay tuned, in case it turns out okay and sees the light of day.

Have a good weekend, everybody!

I'll add my voice to the throng, and announce how great Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is. Whedon's madcap brilliance is every bit as intact as ever, and the songs are fantastic (although poor NPH never seems to finish one).

It actually didn't occur to me until the second time through that the first third of the episode is done in one take with no cuts. Harris is classic awesomeness, as usual, for no reason. I went out and bought some Old Spice, because he told me to. After all, he "used to be a doctor, for pretend."

<lj-embed id="1" />

Update: Episode 2 is awesome, too. This thing's gonna need to be longer than 36 minutes.

This costume would be awesome at D*C. Jacket attained, it's just khakis, welding goggles, welding gloves, and white galoshes.

Even easier would be Captain Hammer, if anyone's interested.

Well, you're supposed to say something good about people when they die. So, Jesse Helms is dead, that's good.

Every flag in NC is STILL at half-mast, almost a week later. Really? Half-mast for Helms? The same tribute we gave Kennedy and Reagan?
Evidently, bigotry is a national treasure.

The Department of Agriculture guy here in NC was apparently told he would have to fly the flag at half-mast for fear of losing his job. He chose to resign. Awesome. I hope he did some Jerry Maguire shit when he left.

They ought to have something else to do, like building a somehow TALLER flagpole, and flying the flag at 1 1/2 mast for a week. Iono.

Poo.

KITTY.

I just spent the past 2 HOURS in the parking lot of an Ingles supermarket, protecting the life of a cat.

When I came out, another customer asked me if the 4Runner out there was mine, I said no, and he told me a little kitten had climbed up in it. I wasn't sure if he was seeing things or what, but I've seen it once before in another parking lot, and sure enough after a second he did the "hangy kitty," where they hold on with front paws and back legs and tail go all dangly. SO CUTE, maybe a few weeks old, and teeny.

Well, the other customers got bored and went inside, and I went in to see if we could find the owner of the car. I couldn't bear to think of the worst that could happen if I didn't. On the other hand, it IS the South, and you don't go poking around under other peoples' cars. The store manager said the car had been there all day, and was likely a drop-off.

So I started poking around under it. I went "kittykitty," which of course didn't work, and I clanged around to try to herd him around. Also didn't work, and I didn't want to terrify the little thing. Finally, I did the craziest thing in my LIFE.

Me: "Mrowwr?"
Kitty: :Mphh::
Me: "Moww.."
Kitty: "Owrr."
Me: "Mrowrr."
Kitty: "Owrowrprrrr.."

I have no idea what I was saying, as my catish is rusty at best, but I hoped it was something calm and reassuring.

Eventually, a car full of teenage boys came up, and basically accosted me for being under their car. Understandably, I guess. Thankfully, I had time to explain before they beat the shit out of me. They called the guy who had the keys, and long story short, the kitty was rescued (against his struggling, hissing, clawing will).

I would totally have taken him home, poor thing. My allergies and his attitude aside, he had GOOD KITTY written all over him. One of the boys had a family who was into cats, though, and already had a few, and they kind of insisted on taking him. I suppose that's best for the cat, if they can take care of him. He was sweet.

So I had an adventure tonight, and might have saved a teeny life. It makes me feel good. I hope he'll be okay.

R U SeriOuZ?

This guy on TFW2005 (My Transformers fanboard) was selling some Alternators. For those just joining in, Alternators and Binaltechs (Meg, vinyl jazz) are the same thing, except Binaltechs are imported, expensive, and die cast, and Alternators are plastic and domestic. Alternators are thus only desirable in situations where they didn't make a Binaltech version of a mold.

Ho-kay. So this guy was selling two loose Alternators I need. I PMmed him, saying WANT. He PMmed me back with his Paypal address. I asked him "er, how much?" He responded with "$100 shipped for both."

This is OUTRAGEOUS. I told him I could get those MISB on eBay at SCALPER prices for $80 shipped. No way I'm paying $100 loose on a fanboard. I offered him $80, he said no, $100. I told him best of luck.

Now he's pissed at me for leading him on for a whole half hour. Not my fault he's delusional about the intrinsic value of a loose plastic Mirage.

As per my tradition, I got a rediculously discounted Dragon*Con ticket from a cancelee. Nothing like saving $20 AND having the $20 transfer fee paid. Thank you to that delightful individual!

Work has been really dull lately. Nothing to do but work on the music website (which I do need to do), and involuntarily perpetuate the myth that one of my OTHER bosses always has me working on something. This is not nefarious intent. I swear, I go into my bosses' offices at least three times a day and go, "You know, I'm really not working on anything right now... can I help with something?" Either they say no, or have me run mail down to the mailroom or something else teeny, and then have me go back to nothing.

Meanwhile, they all talk about what a great job I'm doing, and about how if a permanent position is invented, I'm a shoo-in. I never thought I'd say this, but it'll be nice when I have a job that entails some responsibility. I just feel kinda bored and guilty all the time. I came here for fulfillment, and I have to find that. I think I must need local socialization.

Okay, now to finish ironing and work on Ironhide before bed.

Happy belated ID4.

Whoa. If the amount of beer consumed by me or in my presence over the past 72 hours all got up and went to the same place, I could totally swim in it. Flipcup and waterfalls are evil, but seemed to have my best interests at heart early in the evening.

Photos are downloading now, but some of the best ones were taken by other people. Let's just say there are some I don't EXACTLY recall taking. Pic post forthcoming.

Just got back from Atlanta, where MUCH fun was had by/with all. Disaster movie marathons leave one feeling weary, even if you're not in the room most of the time. Most of all, it was a theraputic decompression session. Which rhymes, but not on purpose.

I found a Husky hair. I'd be happy to send it back, if someone wants to pay the postage.

I might still be a *tad* tipsy.

The OFFICIAL SITE

is coming along really well. I've been working so hard on content for it... and I really want to show it to somebody. But I'm fighting the temptation. Like a pie, it'll be better when it's ready.

;-)

New G. I. Joe Series

Read this only if your threshhold for coolness is ramped way up.
This was announced officially for 2009.

Part 1: New G.I. Joe Animation for 2009.

G.I. Joe Absolute

Adult themed, PG-13
Highly detailed animation
Designed to bring adult fans back into the market
10 5 minute episodes, 1 10 minute season finale
No distribution decided upon yet.
Could be webisodes, could be tv special, could be DVD, or all 3.
Starts in first quarter 2009
NO LASERS. NO PARACHUTING.
Will have deaths.
Little to no blood (but, from what we've seen, that won't matter)
Focus on core early characters.
No Cobra La.

Producers: Sam Register Jaoquim Desantos
Writer: Warren Ellis
Lead Animator: Dave Johnson

1 minute promo animation shown. Breakdown:

Duke and Roadblock are running through the jungle being chased by cobra troopers. Being shot at. You see Roadblock from behind, running, he stops, turns around, and says "You want some of this!? Come on, come on!" and unloads his machine gun into the camera. Heavy sound of loud powerful gunfire, shell casings fly everywhere.

They continue on and take cover inside what looks like a Cobra bunker. Had a cobra symbol on building. Duke radios in for backup, says the LZ is hot. They return fire back and forth with the Cobra Troopers outside, who are moving in using real world cover fire formations.

Then, we pan up, and see the action from above, when you hear a sword bling. A Cobra Trooper looks up, and he sees Snake Eyes dropping down right on his head. Snake Eyes then proceeds to kick ass one by one using hand to hand combat and sword play.

We pan back into Duke and Roadblock, you hear grunts and bones cracking outside, and Duke asks "What the hell is going on out there?" Emphasis on "Hell". Pan back to Snake Eyes, who tosses one of his smaller knifes across the field at a trooper, lands right in the middle of his helmet, he falls. (Don't show the entry, but you get the point. (Fling, pan, hear the pop, heads looking up, falls slowly, etc).

Snake eyes then goes one on one with the last Trooper, flips him over, takes out his sword, thrusts down into the Trooper's chest, and TURNS IT. Stands up, puts sword back in its holder.

Duke and Roadblock come outside, and see all the Troopers dead. He gives a "whooo" type whistle. Roadblock then says "Ninja? I didn't know we had a Ninja." END SCENE.

This story will not be part of the 60 minute story in 2009. It is a stand alone scene they did to show the new tone of the series and what could be done animation and story wise.

They played it 3 times, and the crowd exploded every time. It really was what you've been waiting for from these childhood toy lines as an adult. As they described it in the panel, while you were playing with these toys as a kid, or even watching the shows and reading the comics back then, what we saw today is what we THOUGHT we saw back then. And what we expect, and why the new versions of the old stuff doesn't play with us now. But, this new direction, PG-13 based adult themed entertainment, should fill that gap, and will be focused upon in the upcoming years, for Joe and all brands it fits with. This GI Joe project is however the first of the new direction for Hasbro.

Characters shown:

Duke
Snake Eyes - Goggles
Tunnel Rat
Gung Ho - No chest out
Lady Jaye
Scarlett
Storm Shadow - mask, hood, mix between 2 styles.

Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness confirmed. Lady Jaye more like a Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica type role. Not major player. Cobra Commander is ruthless. Not a clown. Emphasized several times.

Cobra Commander being played by 80s cartoon voice of Tripwire, Charlie Adler.

Ninja moves based on real world techniques.

Real guns, real bullets. No parachuting out of planes right before they blow up. People will die. They said they thought about sniping a guy in a parachute on his way down who actually did make it out of a plane in time.

No direct benchmark for success, will include overall promotion, hits, feedback, news coverage, ratings, eventual DVD sales if sold, etc. But XYZ product making XYZ money doesn't need to happen to continue on, its a brand promotion tool.

Entertainment being done first, and well, to stand on it's own, with product to follow, rather than the reverse. This is first outing with that philosophy.

SHOWED A NEW FLAGG. Updated version, crowd applauded. 2 forward runways in front, all same sticker like applications, and updated but similar rest of body. (Animated version only)

Also, they specifically showed the morgue interior, from the FLAGG. Apparently that will be used a lot.

BOTTOM LINE: AWESOME. WHAT EVERY JOE FAN HAS ALWAYS WANTED.
Capoeira and Stonewall

Spent the morning, afternoon, and into the evening playing capoeira today at the Stonewall Celebration in downtown Asheville. This is the most fun place I have ever lived; moving here was the best idea EVER.

My game is finally improving a little. I'm still far from good, but I'm feeling the flow again. Three years out of the roda takes its toll. We drew a pretty good-size crowd, though, and had a larger turnout than we have since I've been here.

The Stonewall celebration was very much fun, and there was much flamboyancy around, so we blended right in. I got to juggle a bit, too. :-)

In music news, the new website goes live this week... I think. I've been working really hard on it, and it has a few announcements I'm really excited about.

Paz e Axé.

Yeesh.

I was just jumped on for drinking the coffee that was in the coffee pot when I came in this morning. Apparently, the assistant here brews organic coffee for herself, because she has a problem with big coffee companies.

I guess I just assumed that at 8:30 in the morning, any coffee that's just sitting in the office coffee pot is for the office to have. Besides, to the naked eye, it looks exactly like Folger's.

"If you want to drink MY coffee, that's fine," she says. "I just need you to pay me for it. It's *really* expensive. I've been wanting to catch you."

Apparently, everybody knew this ritual but me. I feel awful for drinking the expensive organic coffee, but at the same time kind of think it's rude for one person to commandeer the office's coffee pot for her own demonstrative purposes at 8:30 in the morning. Was it likewise necessary to "catch" me and make a scene in front of the whole office? I get the feeling that was the original goal in the first place.

I extracted myself from the ensuing political discussion about why Big Coffee is evil (it's going on without me right now), and withdrew to my office.

I'll probably go buy a packet of organic coffee for her at lunch, to "replenish her supply." Seems the grown-up thing to do.
